Why Do Some Watches Have a Telemeter?

There is a scale on the dial, almost like a survivor from a vanished world. The pulsometer on medical watches mentioned earlier was also designed to calculate heart rate. The telemeter, now obsolete, is another scale that becomes remarkably appealing when placed on a dial. It can be found printed in blue, red or black around the perimeter of old chronographs. The figures arranged around it indicate not seconds, but kilometres. Intriguing. Bewildering, too. And, to be honest, someone wearing a linen shirt at dinner is highly unlikely to use it to find out how far away a lightning strike occurred. Even so, this scale tells one of the finest stories in the history of watches as instruments.
The telemeter is a practical complication in the truest sense of the word. It is not an additional mechanical mechanism, like a perpetual calendar or minute repeater. It is a function born from the meeting of a chronograph, a physical phenomenon and an extremely specific need: measuring distance through the discrepancy between light and sound. Simple, ingenious, faintly poetic. And sometimes, a little military.
The Telemeter — A Distance Scale Born from the Chronograph
A watch with a telemeter allows you to estimate the distance to an event that can both be seen and heard. The best-known example is probably a thunderstorm. Start the chronograph the moment you see the lightning, then stop it when you hear the thunder. The central chronograph seconds hand will then indicate the approximate distance to the lightning strike on the telemeter scale.
The principle is based on an obvious fact of physics. By our standards, light travels almost instantaneously, whereas sound is far slower, moving through air at approximately 340 metres per second, depending on temperature and atmospheric conditions. Three seconds between the lightning and the thunder? Roughly 1km. Nine seconds? Roughly 3km. That is all. No weather app, premium subscription or American satellite is required to find out whether the sky is about to fall.
In other words, a telemeter is not an independent mechanism. It is generally a scale printed on the dial, used in conjunction with a chronograph. It converts a measurement of time into an indication of distance. The logic is exactly the same as that of a tachymeter, which converts time into speed, or a pulsometer, which derives heart rate from a number of beats. It belongs to an intelligent family of scales inherited from an era when a dial was an instrument, not merely open space reserved for storytelling.

How Do You Read a Telemeter on a Watch?
Using one is almost disarmingly simple. All you need is a properly functioning chronograph and an event that first produces an image and then a sound.
- Observe a visual phenomenon, such as lightning.
- Start the chronograph at the precise moment you see the flash.
- Stop the chronograph when the sound arrives.
- The central seconds hand will then point to the distance on the telemeter scale, usually graduated in kilometres.
Some vintage watches feature a miles scale. On European models, kilometre scales are naturally more common. The design of the scale varies according to the speed of sound adopted by the manufacturer, often around 333 or 340 metres per second. The scales are therefore not entirely standardised, but the principle remains the same.
It is also important to understand the fundamental limitations. A telemeter does not measure absolute distance like a laser rangefinder. It estimates distance from the time interval between two signals, light and sound. Misidentify the source of the sound, be misled by an echo or become so absorbed in admiring the leaf-shaped hand that you start two seconds late, and the result will quickly become rather fanciful.

What Was the Telemeter Scale Actually Used For?
Contrary to an explanation sometimes repeated rather too hastily, the telemeter was not used solely to measure thunderstorms. It played an important role chiefly in military, scientific and medical contexts. Artillerymen could estimate the distance to enemy fire by starting the chronograph at the flash, or the visible moment of firing, and stopping it when the sound arrived. Observers could locate the point of an explosion. For civilians, it was useful for measuring the distance to a storm. For people working outdoors, at sea or in the mountains, this was hardly a trivial matter.
This military aspect explains why so many chronographs were fitted with telemeters between the 1930s and 1950s. At the time, wristwatch chronographs were gradually moving away from the realm of sports jewellery and becoming tools for professionals. Dials grew richer. A tachymeter for measuring speed, a telemeter for measuring distance, a pulsometer for doctors. Sometimes all three were piled onto a single dial in a flamboyant salad of information. Anyone who prefers a clean dial might faint. Collectors, meanwhile, reach for a loupe.
The telemeter is a remnant of the heroic age of the chronograph—of a time when watches were expected to be useful for something specific. This was before “lifestyle” itself became a function.

Telemeters, Tachymeters and Pulsometers — How Not to Confuse the Scales
These three scales are often combined with a chronograph, but each measures something different.
Tachymeter
A tachymeter indicates average speed over a known distance, usually 1km or 1 mile. Start it at the beginning of the course and stop it at the finish, and the hand will indicate the speed. It is the scale emblematic of automotive chronographs, from the Omega Speedmaster to the Rolex Daytona.
Pulsometer
A pulsometer is used to measure heart rate. On a dial marked, for example, “30 pulsations”, a doctor starts the chronograph at the first beat, counts 30 beats and stops it; the scale then gives the number of beats per minute. This is why many vintage medical chronographs feature pulsometer scales that are exceptionally easy to read.
Telemeter
A telemeter measures distance from the time taken for sound to reach you. It belongs to the same visual language, but serves a different purpose. Of the three, it may be the most romantic. It conjures lightning, artillery shells, explosions and black skies. The tachymeter smells of petrol. The pulsometer smells of hospital. The telemeter smells of ozone.

Why Did Telemeters Disappear from Modern Watches?
Part of the answer is in your pocket. A smartphone can tell you the weather, your location, the distance to a thunderstorm, the wind speed and, if asked, probably your neighbour’s level of anxiety as well. Specialised analogue instruments have lost their practical urgency.
There is another reason, however: legibility. A telemeter scale needs space. It adds another ring of figures around the indices. On already information-rich bi-compax or tri-compax chronographs, the whole thing can quickly begin to resemble a general staff map. Modern brands have often preferred the “purity” of design and opted for the tachymeter, which is more easily associated with sport, speed and automobiles.
And so the telemeter became rare. That is precisely what makes it appealing. In an industry where everyone wants to tell a story, the telemeter prints a genuine one on the dial without the need for a press release as thick as a telephone directory.
Notable Watches with Telemeter Scales
Telemeters are found mainly on vintage-inspired chronographs, reissues of historical models or collectors’ pieces. Here are several well-known examples, with reference numbers included wherever they can be clearly identified.
Omega Speedmaster Chronoscope

Introduced in 2021, the Omega Speedmaster Chronoscope is one of the most striking modern examples. It combines three concentric scales—a tachymeter, a pulsometer and a telemeter—in a design strongly inspired by Omega chronographs from the 1940s. Its addition to the Speedmaster collection is intriguing. Rather than replaying only the story of space exploration, Omega is evoking here the golden age of the measuring chronograph.

The dial is information-dense, almost to the point of erudition. Some will see information overload. Others may read a kind of musical score in it. Both interpretations are valid. Only one of them, however, can measure the size of a storm.
Montblanc 1858 Monopusher Chronograph

The Montblanc 1858 line, which carries on Minerva’s aesthetic, has frequently turned the spotlight on historic chronographs. Several models incorporate outer scales with considerable skill, and some editions also feature a telemeter. This makes sense. Minerva, once one of the great names in 20th-century precision chronographs, produced column-wheel chronograph movements that can still make the eyebrows of seasoned enthusiasts rise involuntarily.
The monopusher brings an additional sense of occasion. It is a mechanism that controls the start, stop and reset of the chronograph through a single button. Less suited to repeated measurements than a two-pusher system, perhaps, but the act of operating it is supremely elegant. Yes, watchmaking is sometimes about gestures that are unnecessary, yet somehow essential.
Vintage Universal Genève, Minerva, Angelus and Doxa Chronographs
In the vintage market, telemeters are a particularly rewarding field. Chronographs with telemeter scales can be found from Universal Genève, Minerva, Angelus, Doxa and Eberhard, as well as Excelsior Park and certain lesser-known manufacturers using Valjoux, Landeron or Venus calibres. Many dials are magnificent, with two-tone finishes, red and blue printing, delicate typography, recessed sub-dials and that visual depth which reissues attempt to recreate, not always successfully.
Caution is essential, however. The field is full of refinished dials, strange scales and watches assembled from conveniently matched parts. A vintage telemeter requires serious scrutiny of the consistency of its typography, the ageing of its luminous material, the alignment of its printing and the compatibility of the case, movement and dial. Poetry is welcome. Naivety is not.

Why Telemeter Dials Are So Loved
The telemeter is appealing because it brings an intellectual tension to the dial. A watch with a telemeter does more than tell the time and measure the duration of a soft-boiled egg. It reminds us that time can become distance, and that a few seconds can describe the space between ourselves and a phenomenon. It is a beautiful idea.
Visually, too, the telemeter scale creates a distinctive balance. Placed around the perimeter, it frames the dial and reinforces its instrument-like character. Combined with a bi-compax layout, Arabic numerals, a railway track and snake or leaf-shaped hands, it can transform a relatively simple watch into something rich with narrative. As long as the design is skilfully composed, it attracts the eye without necessarily becoming overbearing.
There is also a cultural pleasure involved. Wearing a chronograph with a telemeter means wearing a fragment of applied science. It belongs to an era when simplified equations were printed on 36mm dials. The elegance is entirely distinctive—somewhat textbook-like, certainly, but in the best possible sense. It is the kind of detail that makes those who recognise it smile.

A Useless Detail? Perhaps…
The great irony of the telemeter is that, despite being almost useless in everyday life today, it still retains a genuine legitimacy. Many modern watch complications share the same fate. A moon-phase display will not get you home any earlier. An equation-of-time indicator will not prevent you from missing your train. A tourbillon, even at €180,000, will not make your coffee taste better. And yet these functions have meaning, because they condense a culture of technology.
The telemeter belongs to that category. It is not trying to compete with modern electronics. It simply reminds us that, for a long time, the wristwatch was an interface between human beings and the world. A small mechanical—or rather analogue—computer worn on the wrist. In an age when connected devices grow old like yoghurt left outside the refrigerator, there is something almost unshakeably dignified about this simplicity.

Should You Buy a Watch with a Telemeter?
If you are looking for a function that is indispensable in daily life, the answer is probably no. But if you like historic chronographs, intelligent dials and watches with something more to say than “look at my ceramic bezel”, the telemeter deserves your attention.
Choose carefully, however. With a modern watch, examine its legibility, design coherence and the quality of its chronograph movement. With a vintage piece, give priority above all to the condition and authenticity of the dial. A beautiful telemeter scale repainted yesterday has an entirely different character from original printing whose texture has been subtly enriched by 70 years of age.
A telemeter is not a spectacular complication. No window opens, no sound rings out, no cage dances. It simply uses the chronograph hand to convert sound into distance. It is a small thing. But it is also a great thing. And when watchmaking stops trying to be pretentious, details like this remind us why it can still teach us to see the world from another angle.
