10 Watches from Baselworld 2015

Melchior-mbandf

I’m not claiming this selection represents the 10 best watches of Baselworld 2015 (the World Watch and Jewellery Show), but they are nonetheless 10 timepieces that caught my eye amid the tidal wave of press releases, photos coming in from social media, and my visit to the fair.

Tudor North Flag

Tudor is undeniably getting sexier and sexier! Beyond the new Pelagos with its handsome blue and its in-house movement, Rolex’s little sister is treating fans of high-quality, accessible watches—and… impeccable design—with the new North Flag, which should be priced at around €3,000.

Rolex Oyster Perpetual Yacht‑Master

Minor changes for some become major when it comes to Rolex. The Yacht‑Master case is dressed in rose gold and topped with a ceramic bezel. Rolex is also trying its hand at a rubber strap, which is far from trivial for a brand offering it for the first time. Finally, the watch is fitted with a new movement. Beautiful, chic, revolutionary for the brand—yet discreet for the owner. Flawless.

Antoine Preziuso

Spellbinding, the Antoine Preziuso Tourbillon des Tourbillons features three tourbillons that rotate on their axis once per minute and are mounted on a platform that itself makes a full circuit of the dial in 10 minutes. The piece will be available in only 5 examples.

Patek Philippe Calatrava Pilot Travel Time

We weren’t expecting Patek Philippe to step onto the pilots’ watch turf. Patek surprises—and, when all is said and done, lands the punch!

Maurice Lacroix Masterpiece Gravity

A tribute watch marking the brand’s 40th anniversary, the Masterpiece Gravity 40th packs in a concentration of technology: the in-house ML230 movement, a silicon assortment, a splendid lacquered blue dial, and a Powerlite case (a strong, lightweight material).

MB&F Melchior

True to himself, Maximilian Büsser delivers a 30 cm robot clock answering to the name Melchior. Its machine-gun forearm—enough to make Cobra blush—detaches to wind Melchior every 40 days.

MB&F can thus sell a new machine to its clients and prospects, even if their wrists are already taken.

HYT

Montre-HYT-H3 HYT-H3

After an HYT Skull watch and H2 variations fitted with resin cases, Vincent Perriard unveils the much-anticipated H3. Out with the round: the case adopts rectangular dimensions of 62 x 41 mm and an original display combining liquid, a row of 6 cubes, and a kind of slider.

Angelus U10 Tourbillon Lumière

Who goes there… The Angelus brand is back to life, founded in 1891 in Le Locle, Switzerland. Rectangular like the new HYT or the Moon Orbiter by Romain Jerome, the Angelus U10 Tourbillon Lumière is a great find.

Fabergé

Fabergé is making a strong return to the forefront with the Lady Compliquée Winter and Peacock watches. The hours are indicated by the unfolding of a fan or the peacock’s feathers, depending on the model.
