Edmond Pole Guardian Watch: An Innovative 24-Hour Dial

The Swiss watch brand Edmond, founded in 2008 by automotive designer Jean-Pierre Edmond, is particularly proud of its latest release: the Edmond Pole Guardian.

True to its positioning, Edmond delivers a well-made watch that is sporty, accessible and clever. Named Pole Guardian as a tribute to polar exploration, this timepiece is designed to withstand extreme conditions.

Jean-Pierre Edmond is, ultimately, an incorrigible designer—and that is certainly what makes the Pole Guardian a successful product. For him, technology must bend to serve the idea, the concept, the use (are you with me?) and not the other way around.

The idea. Sensitive to the protection of the poles, the Edmond brand developed this watch as a symbol of its commitment to safeguarding nature. Yet time is a difficult notion to grasp in polar environments; you need a watch with a 24-hour dial to indicate the actual time during polar days or polar nights.

The technology. The standout innovation of this watch lies in its ability to display an ingenious dial capable of showing the time over 24 hours through a very interesting system of rotating discs. This makes it possible to distinguish 6 o’clock from 18 o’clock. It houses an ETA 2824-2 automatic movement (ETA is a Swiss watch movement manufacturer that produces calibres for many watch brands: read our article on ETA watch movements).

The Edmond Pole Guardian features a large 44 mm stainless-steel case. A skeleton watch, its movement is visible through the sapphire crystal on the caseback.

To brave the elements, the watch is equipped with a crown guard (the Lock-Ed concept) and finished with an extra-hard PVD coating. PVD stands for Physical Vapour Deposition, a surface-treatment process that is highly resistant to wear.
