Watch Straps: Making the Right Choice

Only yesterday, I was able to sit in on a debate about choosing the strap for a prototype watch. The discussion was heated, cutting—what am I saying… downright bloody! Everyone had their own view on the ideal material, and for those who prefer the elegance of leather, it’s possible to find straps that combine nobility and style.
Chances are even Kofi Annan himself would have struggled to calm things down. Because yes, choosing a watch strap is no trivial matter. Just imagine for a second pulling on a pair of electric-blue sweatpants with a shirt featuring French cuffs and rose-gold cufflinks. A strap and a case must match and be conceived as a whole. It’s almost a symbolon (σύμβολον for fans of semiology… or Ancient Greek).

Between thickness, material, texture and colour, the strap is an essential element in a watch’s overall composition. Comfort matters, unquestionably, but it must go hand in hand with visual comfort, which comes from harmony between the watch case and the strap.
Faithful readers of Montres-passion.fr, you are undoubtedly a refined person and are looking to find the straps best suited to your tastes and to your watches’ cases.
We all have our go-to places, in person. Selfish as I am, I wouldn’t share my “physical” addresses for finding watch straps—not even under torture. On the other hand, I can recommend an online shop I’ve tested before, offering metal, silicone, nylon straps… in short, a wide selection, along with pin buckles, folding clasps, and even butterfly deployants.
