The Cable Z by The Electricianz

Voici une young watch brand that will, without a doubt, soon be taking pride of place on many watchmaking fans’ wrists.

What if, instead of showing off the inner workings of a mechanical watch, a watch brand paid tribute to the electrical energy that powers the vast majority of timekeeping instruments?

The Electricianz is a Swiss watch brand, and I’m delighted to introduce you to a model with a design that is, to say the least, striking, atypical and genuinely interesting: the Cable Z.

You’ll find a video at the end of the article.

This isn’t the brand’s first attempt either, as this Cable Z is the 5th model released (and at the time of writing, there are six in total).

Before we get into the nuts and bolts of the watch, let’s take a quick look at the brand and its concept.

Between tradition and modernity … 😂

The Electricianz doesn’t trot out the tired old refrain of the watch brand that “sits between tradition and modernity”, but instead immediately makes it clear it wants to create cool, modern, distinctive designs at a great price.

Regular readers of this blog will instantly make the connection with a brand I’m very fond of: SevenFriday (see here).

Well, that link is no coincidence. In fact, SevenFriday and The Electricianz share something in common: Studio Divine, a Swiss branding and product-design agency specialising in watches.

The Electricianz’s concept revolves around electricity, as the name suggests. The energy at the source of the watch’s operation—and, in the case of the model I’m presenting here, in the explosive colours, the electrical cables, the light and even the watch’s crown.

The concept is expressed through modern, different watches at a very attractive price. With me so far? Then let’s take a closer look at the product.

The Cable Z, from the “Electric Art” collection, is a flashy watch that doesn’t go unnoticed… and that’s a good thing!

A 45mm lightning-yellow nylon case, an electric-blue NATO strap and a chromed bezel: the tone is set.

I was worried the case would be too large for my wrist, but in the end this diameter is necessary and justified to properly showcase the superb dial.

The right-hand side of the dial displays hours, minutes and seconds, with an opening that reveals a copper coil.

The hands pick up on electrical colour codes, with the seconds in green and yellow to symbolise earth, the hours in red for live, and the minutes in blue for neutral.

On the left, electrical cables dress the rest of the dial: it’s original, creative and very well executed.

The crown features a slot reminiscent of a flat-head screw, another detail drawn from the electrician’s universe.

At two o’clock, you’ll notice a push-button. Press it and—surprise—four LEDs light up the dial! And there you are, grinning like you did as a kid when you pressed the button on your Casio to light it up for the first time in the dark.

The circle is complete: electricity, energy conducted through cables, live / neutral / earth ——-> Time and Light 💡!

And because the concept is fully thought through and The Electricianz hasn’t overlooked a single detail, the watch’s presentation box is shaped like a… battery.

I won’t dwell on the movement, whose technicalities are of little interest within the watch’s concept. Let’s simply remember that it is the source of electrical energy.

Worth noting, however, is the presence of an NFC chip (Near-field communication), which makes it possible to link the watch to its owner (traceability), fight replicas and streamline after-sales service via the The Electricianz app on your smartphone. And yes, electricity is also about connectivity.

Alright, I’ll allow myself two small regrets—even if, at this price, you can’t ask for too much:

  • The crystal isn’t sapphire but K1 mineral (more robust than standard mineral) with an anti-reflective treatment.
  • We would have liked to enjoy the watch in the water; unfortunately it’s only water-resistant to 3 ATM.

The price, a strong point: €375.

In conclusion, this is an ambitious and successful bet: no one had made the use of a battery-powered movement so sexy while putting it centre stage!
