Swatch Bioceramic MoonSwatch Mission to Earthphase: The First Earth Phase

Omega Swatch Bioceramic MoonSwatch Mission to Earthphase

The new Bioceramic MoonSwatch Mission to Earthphase, unveiled by Swatch in October 2024, is an unprecedented watchmaking creation celebrating the Earth and the Moon through a non-limited watch, incorporating for the first time in the history of watchmaking an earth phase in addition to the moon phase. This dual complication—innovative and poetic—offers a fresh view of the two celestial bodies.

A first-ever earth phase alongside the moon phase

Inspired by photographs of the Earth from the Moon captured during the Apollo missions, the Mission to Earthphase displays an earth phase on a sub-dial at 10 o’clock, revealing the planet’s varied colours, including oceans, forests, deserts and clouds. This sub-dial contrasts with the moon-phase display at 2 o’clock, where the Moon follows its traditional cycle.

These two phases, synchronised over a 29.5-day cycle, complement and oppose one another: when the Moon is full, the Earth is in a new phase, and vice versa. The earth phase, rotating counter to the hands, is a unique reinterpretation of the retrograde function, usually reserved for high watchmaking.

A tribute to iconic materials and design

Crafted in bioceramic, a patented material made from ceramic and bio-sourced components derived from castor oil, the Mission to Earthphase follows in the MoonSwatch line with details that echo Omega’s legendary Speedmaster Moonwatch. The asymmetrical case, black tachymeter bezel and dot over 90 reinforce this tribute. A domed crystal in bio-sourced material, with a central “S” for Swatch, protects the textured dial, which mimics lunar dust with a grained finish.
