SevenFriday: M1-1 and P3-3 Watches

Back to business! For the occasion, SevenFriday is delivering two new watches: the much-anticipated M series (M1-1 and M2-1) and the unexpected P3-3. The finishing remains every bit as impressive.

The P3/3 is the latest addition to the P Industrial Engines series (read my fabulous post on the P2-1).

The generously sized 47mm case of the SevenFriday P3-3 watch is made of grey PVD-treated steel. The caseband is adorned with a white rubber strip.

The 11 components of the dial—discs, hands, cut-outs and the interplay of different textures—give the watch an appealing sense of depth. White, grey and orange accents work together beautifully.

At 7 o’clock, there’s a lovely view of the balance and hairspring of the Miyota 82S7 movement. I can already hear the purists complaining that it isn’t an ETA. Yet this movement’s reputation needs no introduction: it’s a true “workhorse” that requires little maintenance and is built to take a beating.

The disc at 9 o’clock is a 24-hour function (so you’ll know whether it’s 9 a.m. or 9 p.m., should you suddenly feel like roaming around the Arctic Circle).

At 5 o’clock sits the seconds disc.

The rubber strap is sturdy and thick enough.

One regret: the anti-reflective crystal is mineral. We would have preferred a sapphire crystal, less prone to scratches—but at this price, we won’t nitpick.

Price: around €800 excl. VAT. It’s beautiful, different, solid, well finished—go for it!

Sevenfriday M1-1

The new Sevenfriday M series watch announced in June has moved from prototype status to a piece on sale in all the right places.

The M1-1 adopts the case of the P series but truly comes into its own through its dial. With a pyramidal construction and striking relief, the dial features an assembly of three discs instead of the hands used on the P series. Time reading is therefore completely different. The outer disc indicates the hours, the middle disc the minutes, and the central disc the seconds.

The steel case (47 x 47.6mm) features polished and polished-satin finishes. The dial alternates between 10 components with brushed or satin finishes. The movement is a Miyota 8215, cased so that the crown sits on the left.

You might question this choice: was it necessary to make the time display work, or was it a deliberate move to prevent the crown from interfering with the left hand’s movements? Either way, this particularity only adds to the watch’s singular character.

The fact that it doesn’t offer special complications requiring regular adjustments isn’t a drawback—quite the opposite. The crystal is, once again, mineral. We would also have liked a thicker (leather) strap, but it has to be said that fans of the brand have got into the habit of having custom straps made, and there’s a good chance I’ll do the same.

Price: around €1,000 excl. VAT. It’s new, it’s beautiful—we’re sold! To finish, here’s a short video of the watches, including an impression on a 16.5cm wrist to ease any reservations about the case size. Don’t forget that the absence of lugs changes everything.
