Halcyon Journey: The Elegance of Porcelain on the Wrist

Montres Halcyon Journey

I must admit that the geographical origin of the Halcyon Journey raised a few reservations even before I opened its presentation box. Chinese watches are still too often associated with low-end products. And yet, this piece managed to overturn my preconceptions and deliver a very pleasant surprise.

A prestigious origin: the porcelain capital

Watch Halcyon

The Halcyon Journey watch comes from Jingdezhen, a city tucked away in the north of China’s Jiangxi province, often described as the world capital of porcelain. This prestigious title is well deserved: for centuries, local artisans have refined the art of working with this material. As early as the Tang dynasty, Jingdezhen was described as a place where the kilns “linked the villages together”.

This know-how reached its peak under the Ming and Qing dynasties, when the porcelain produced in this region was destined for the imperial court. Today, the tradition lives on in modern applications such as Halcyon watches.

The idea of integrating porcelain into watchmaking is not common. Halcyon leans on this cultural heritage to stand out, and choosing this material for the dial embodies a subtle, timeless elegance.

A porcelain dial

Its production demands remarkable technical mastery and artisanal skill. Porcelain is fragile and requires flawless firing to avoid defects. Halcyon sets itself apart by being one of only three brands in the world to employ a master porcelain maker for this type of product. That said, Blancpain, Seiko and Frederique Constant have also successfully used porcelain for their dials.

The Halcyon Journey’s dial, an immaculate white close to eggshell, reflects a soft light that gives the watch a luxurious yet understated presence.

The Miyota 9039 movement: a reliable choice

The watch I tested is powered by the Japanese Miyota 9039 movement, produced by Citizen. This automatic calibre is widely appreciated for its accuracy and robustness.

With a 42-hour power reserve and a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour, it holds its own against certain entry-level Swiss movements. It’s what we call a “tractor” for its durability.

Strap and buckle

While the Halcyon Journey shines in certain respects, it isn’t immune to a few criticisms. First of all, the leather strap leaves a mixed impression. Although it is supple and comfortable on the wrist, its overall quality seems out of step with the rest of the watch.

Premature wear is a concern, which may be a little disappointing for a product priced at 780 euros.

To prevent the dial from suffering an elephantine fall from our wrist, we would have liked a deployant clasp rather than a pin buckle, because chances are you’ll grow attached to this lovely timepiece 🙂

This watch is a delightful surprise, owing much to the nobility of its dial. It is a fine tribute to porcelain, bringing a distinctive elegance that one is happy to add to a watch collection.
