Baume & Mercier Big Date and Power Reserve

You feel right at home at Baume & Mercier at SIHH. A Hamptons-house vibe, comfortable sofas, dark woods and light tones …
Baume & Mercier is focusing its message on celebration: a wedding, an engagement, a graduation … What better symbol than a watch to mark a milestone, a transition, to turn a new page. That is the positioning Baume & Mercier has chosen.
We’re going to take a closer look at one model that particularly caught my eye: the new Clifton Automatic Big Date and Power Reserve.
Some successful models deserved to be highlighted, notably the Classima moon phases or the Promesse mother-of-pearl set with diamonds, but I’m more interested in men’s watches 🙂
The Clifton has been revisited with work on the case, but I’ll admit it interests me less (see below).
Back to the Clifton. I was able to see exceptional watches at SIHH (Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie), but the most extraordinary pieces shouldn’t overshadow more accessible watches.
The Clifton Automatic Big Date and Power Reserve is a well-thought-out watch. With a clean, broadly appealing design, it’s easy to wear in the city, for an evening out, or at the weekend.
Legibility is strong thanks to a bright, simple dial that has the luxury of displaying a Big Date at 12 o’clock and a power-reserve indicator at 6 o’clock.
The polished and satin-finished steel case, 43 mm in diameter, with its timeless design, guarantees a flawless fit on the wrist whatever the outfit or occasion.
The Swiss movement is a Soprod, visible through the sapphire crystal on the caseback. The oscillating weight is engraved with the Greek Phi, which forms part of Baume & Mercier’s logo.
The watch is water-resistant to 50 metres, but we certainly wouldn’t advise fitting it with a metal bracelet or a NATO if you’re planning to take a dip with it.
The price is €3,400. A reasonable figure for a Swiss-made watch from a Richemont Group brand, equipped with a well-made Soprod movement and likeable complications for a first automatic watch.
