Marvin Malton Coussin Crantée: Exclusive Review

Marvin Malton Coussin Crantée

Marvin—which I like to call the oldest of watchmaking start-ups—has kept its freshness thanks to a team brimming with energy, ingenuity and talent, paired with the authenticity of a maison founded in 1850. Marvin’s team, no doubt inspired by its ambassador Sébastien Loeb, moves fast—very fast.

Building on the success of the Malton Coussin watch and its many variations (including the sexy Kaki released for Marvin’s 160th anniversary), here comes the Malton 160 Coussin Crantée. Sometimes all it takes is a single detail to transform a watch and make all the difference. That’s exactly what happened here: a striking new fluted bezel has come to dress the latest Malton Coussin models. And as good news rarely comes alone, the watch is now available with a white dial version, which I was able to test for you. Yes, the elegant, sporty man likes to match his outfit to his timepiece—while keeping a decidedly virile look thanks to the 42 mm steel case. A hallmark of Marvin watches since the brand’s inception, the “red detail” (the red dial marker at 8 o’clock) is, of course, present. If you’d like to know the origin of this tradition, I invite you to explore the dungeons of Vaumarcus Castle in Switzerland, Marvin’s headquarters, in the hope of uncovering its secret.

Beneath the anti-reflective sapphire crystal, the dial features the chronograph, the minute and hour counters, the small seconds, as well as a double day/date window at 3 o’clock. The overall layout is harmonious and offers good legibility. There’s no point trying to pigeonhole the watch into a single category: the clever blend of design and materials, the cushion-shaped case and the dial place it somewhere between elegant cool and sporty design… In short, rather than filing it away under a label, you’ll prefer to strap it on. The Malton Coussin Crantée remains a cheerful testament to the creativity and freshness of a brand in tune with the times.

As for the movement, the watch is powered by an automatic ETA Valjoux 7750, robust and reliable in its most accomplished finish, with 25 jewels. With a power reserve of 48 hours, it beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour—even at a depth of 50 metres. The movement can be admired through the watch’s transparent caseback.

We rarely talk about presentation boxes, even though they are an integral part of the watch. Discovering a watch should be an experience—from opening the box to slipping the timepiece onto the wrist. The box designed by Marvin does not disappoint: imposing and robust, it proves worthy of what it contains.
